Abstract	Analyses of population statistics for persons with Spanish surnames in California in 1960 indicate a movement from rural to urban areas, although not to the extent that Negro or total nonwhite populations have become urbanized. Unemployment rates for persons with Spanish surnames remain above those for the total white population, and automation and technological change threaten the types of jobs held by members of this group. The median annual income in 1959 for persons with Spanish surnames was lower than that of the total white population, but generally higher than that for nonwhite families. Statistics reflect a greater concentration of persons with Spanish surnames in lower age brackets (70.4 percent under age 35) and larger family size than either nonwhite or total white population.
