AbstractAnna has serious learning differences, but she's bright. She was impulsive and irrepressible. She was often subject to high levels of anxiety and had difficulty focusing. She was sociable, but she didn't know how to make friends. Anna needed a calm, structured environment which valued academic achievement, but did not push the students to take on more than they could handle and which de-emphasized testing. She needed a school that focused on the development of the whole child, a school whose teachers were willing to work with her learning differences, a school whose students would accept her as she was. Anna's parents had to consider what would work best for Anna. For elementary school, they chose a public school with a strong and supportive principal and a kindergarten teacher who sang her way through routines designed to integrate the children into the life of the school. They also chose a public middle school and a public high school. In this article, the author, Anna's mom, tells why they chose a public school. (ERIC).
