Abstract | Aware of the increasing burden of fuel costs on their students, administrators of rural community colleges are looking for ways to help students stay on track with their studies even as their monthly transportation bills rise. Two common tactics are increasing the number of online courses and offering block scheduling that allows students to pack in as many courses as possible in a day or two. Other rural community colleges now operate on four-day teaching schedules. Colleges are actively car pooling by creating maps of college service areas. Posted in central locations, registering students can coordinate ride-sharing programs with others in their communities. Other rural community colleges are adopting a wait-and-see approach to the cost of transportation, unsure of how gasoline prices will affect their enrollments or the financial well-being of their students.
