Abstract | A tipping point with the "Chronicle of Higher Education" and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has been reached. A tipping point, by definition, is the effect of many events, often small and seemingly insignificant. At the "Chronicle," the tipping point finally came on September 21, 2007, when the journal published a short and seemingly simple story by Robin Wilson, on the AAUP's Freedom in the Classroom statement. In the AAUP report, Wilson portrayed it as an organization that is ailing, aged, and balding, with a schizophrenic mission, in desperate need of mandatory retirement. In this article, the author states her opinion on how the "Chronicle" should have reported this news with some semblance of neutrality. She laments that, through Wilson's article, the "Chronicle" has created a strangely hostile media environment for faculty and higher education in general. She also comments on the fact that educators have tended to ignore, downgrade, or disparage the critical importance of media coverage of higher education. As such, she asks everyone in the academe to make an effort to do some shoring up of their own. (ERIC). |
