| Abstract | Art often becomes an effective tool for teaching history, as well as political and social justice issues. During the 1980s, the author had the privilege of visiting Chile where she was introduced to small fabric collages called "arpilleras," which, at the time, were known as "embroideries of life and death." Today, the arpillera is no longer used as a form of political outcry, but is instead made for the tourist industry. The practice has spread to Peru and now arpilleras often show scenes of village life, weddings, and the Day of the Dead. This article describes how an arpillera is made and presents an activity for the students. (Contains 3 resources and 2 online resources.) (ERIC). |
