Abstract | The relationship between research and teaching has been an issue in higher education for many years. Arguments about how and whether research informs teaching have been pursued since at least the early nineties. Definitive reviews at that time found little or no evidence of a causal relationship between effective undergraduate teaching and high levels of research activity. At the time, much of this argument was around the existence, indeed development, of a research culture in "new" universities in Great Britain. In this article, the author traces the history of the relationship between research and practice in the U.K. Then, he offers a case study of how the University of Wolverhampton has built capacity into the scholarship of teaching.
