AbstractFaculty members desiring administrative roles can find the structure and function of shared governance a fertile ground for growth through practical experience in institutional decision making. Typical areas of faculty governance work include departmental and degree-level curricular matters; policies on such matters as reappointment, tenure and promotion; academic policies for student enrollment, dismissal, and graduation; and assessment and program review. Some institutions also include faculty in long-range academic planning and resource allocation for educational programs. Faculty governance: (1) contributes to the management of a college or university; (2) provides a forum for faculty debate and resolution of institutional policies; (3) develops a shared understanding of or consensus among faculty on educational or institutional goals; and (4) symbolizes commitment to professional values and authority. In addition to these points, some practical suggestions for helping faculty understand governance are discussed. (ERIC).
