Abstract | Two functions of narrative common in educational discourse are coercive and emancipatory narratives. To account for the apparently contradictory purposes, researchers must take a longitudinal view and understand the contexts in which narratives arise. Research on teaching must make provisions for the multifunctionality of narrative. (SM) |
