AbstractThe research cited in this article provides a comprehensive summary of the risk factors for LGBTQ youth, which represents a strength of this body of work. It is important for mental health professionals to be aware of the risk factors for this diverse population in order to better understand the experiences of LGBTQ youth and how these experiences can impact their lives. Knowing the risk factors for mental health issues in LGBTQ youth helps professionals in related fields to identify areas where intervention should occur or determine how to target treatment. A similar strength is that studies that explore risk factors within this diverse population consistently find the same results--that LGBTQ youth are at higher risk for experiencing a variety of mental and physical health challenges related to the victimization and discrimination that they receive. Although some articles list protective factors and the relationship they have with positive health outcomes, few directly focused on intervention or prevention strategies that can be used to maximize protective factors for these LGBTQ youth. Based on research findings, it can be assumed that (a) families should be accepting of their child's sexual orientation and gender identity, (b) peers should continue friendships with LGBTQ youth after they disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity, (c) all states and schools should adopt anti bullying laws that are related to sexual orientation and gender identity, and (d) schools should create GSA clubs, provide professional development for school staff about LGBTQ youth, and utilize inclusive curricula.
