AbstractThe main aim of this study is to offer a comparative analysis of historical narratives, with reference to the nexus between ideology, the state, and nation-building--as depicted in current history school textbooks in the Russian Federation (RF). This analysis of the core Russian history textbooks prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Science for all secondary schools across the RF represents one of the first international analyses of current Russian history textbooks. The analysis of historical narratives refers to the following: balance in the content, whether they are accurate, whether they are creating new representations in Russian history, and whether these new narratives generally emphasise nationalist 'bright spots' in Russian achievements. The history textbooks analysis focused on representations of historical narratives covering 1700-2011, dealing with selected key events in Russian history. The study demonstrates that there has been a clear ideological shift in the politicizing of history education in schools across the RF, and an ideological re-positioning of Russian history textbooks.
