AbstractEfforts to improve school climate, safety, and learning are not separate endeavors. They must be designed, funded, and implemented as a comprehensive school-wide approach that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration and builds on a multitiered system of supports. The author organizations and cosigners of this joint statement believe that, while schools are among the safest places for American's children, violence prevention and student well-being must be made a priority in the nation's schools and communities. The author organizations represent the educators who work day in and day out to keep children safe, ensure their well-being, and promote learning. This joint statement provides a framework supported by educators for improving school safety and increasing access to mental health supports for children and youth. These policy and practice recommendations were created to help provide guidance to the Administration, Congress, and state and local agencies as they reflect upon evidence for best practices in school safety and climate, student mental health and well-being, instructional leadership, teaching, and learning. [This Framework was co-authored by the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA). It was originally published in 2013.] (ERIC).
