Abstract | As the issue of school reform grows ever more intense, it is imperative that we learn what we can from previous efforts. The new social studies was a 1960's attempt to transform the teaching of history and the social sciences in schools. With origins in the Cold War, the movement sought to develop critical thinkers through "inquiry" and "discovery." Though it led to a veritable treasure trove of innovative materials, the "revolution" envisioned by its proponents never materialized. Engagingly written and drawing on previously untapped archival sources, "The Hope for American School Reform" offers an insightful perspective on current trends. Following an introduction, Persistent Dilemmas of Curriculum Improvement, this book is divided into four parts. Part I, The Cold War Origins of Curriculum Reform, contains the following: (1) Culture War Over the Schools; and (2) The Ultimate Weapon. Part II: From Woods Hole to Project Social Studies: Emergence of a Reform, contains the following: (3) Great Minds at Woods Hole; and (4) Showdown at Endicott House. Part III, Into the Schools, contains the following: (6) The Projects. Finally, Part IV, Considering Alternatives, contains the following: (7) Critiques and Dilemmas; (9) Reform in Perspective; and (10) Conclusion: Time of Hope, a Time of Fear. (ERIC). |
