Abstract | This report provides an overview of practical challenges of management development (MD) in major United Kingdom employing organizations. It is based on discussions with MD managers representing about 30 large organizations in both private and public sectors, including international companies who attended 2 forums; published material; and research projects. Chapter 2 looks at the changing context in which MD takes place, including that complex and turbulent organizations need to find and keep good managers and that they want transformational leaders who need to learn continuously. Resulting challenges are setting the strategy, meeting diverse needs, coping with pressure, changing delivery, and conducting evaluation. Chapter 3 provides a brief overview of some trends and new directions in MD practice and some practical issues they raise. It looks at these three broad forms of development: formal training and management education, informal and more personal development, and the processes for career development. Chapter 4 summarizes these key issues the forum participants saw as shaping the MD strategies and practices of their organizations: focus and coherence; balancing business with individual needs; how MD is delivered, resourcing of MD, learning organization; and evaluating MD. Chapter 5 looks to the future. (Contains 84 references.) (YLB) |
