Abstract | Service learning, curriculum-linked community service, has proved remarkably effective in igniting students' desire to learn. In 1997, the Wisconsin Partnership in Service Learning was initiated as a cross-disciplinary, cross-institutional endeavor. Supported by a grant from Learn and Serve America, the partnership created a network throughout Wisconsin of educators from universities, community and technical colleges, and K-12 public school systems. Though the program was initiated from university campuses, leaders reached out to include educators at all levels. This report discusses the partnership and its benefits; describes its many and varied projects (such as middle school students creating a vegetable garden/food pantry project with help from technical college students, and elementary students starting a student newspaper with help from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee journalism students); and considers some of the contributions of the six Wisconsin state universities (UW Green Bay, UW Milwaukee, UW River Falls, UW Stout, UW Superior, and UW Whitewater) that joined the partnership.
