AbstractThis is a project brief on the Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning program, which is designed to integrate service learning into the institutional climate of community colleges and increase the number and quality of service learning programs in all higher education institutions. The program is supported by the Corporation for National Service and administered by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). The Horizons project features model service learning programs, collects national data on service learning, and maintains a service learning clearinghouse. The program also provides professional development and technical assistance through workshops, mentoring, publications, and online services. This brief describes service learning programs at 4 Horizons mentor community colleges and 10 Horizons mentee community colleges for the years 2000 to 2003. Colleges were involved in: (1) providing opportunities for student leadership development; (2) addressing local community needs; (3) increasing students' awareness of personal and civic responsibility; (4) developing partnerships with K-12 schools; and (5) creating a service learning curriculum. The brief offers recommendations on incorporating service learning into the college curriculum. It also includes contact information for Horizons community college service learning centers and links to informational service-learning Web sites. (MKF)
