Abstract | This three-section guide was created to help people with disabilities in the state of Colorado look for and find employment. Aimed at both potential employees and employers, the guide provides information to help citizens with disabilities to prepare for and represent themselves when seeking employment and to better understand their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It also provides information to help Colorado employers to ensure equality of opportunity for individuals with disabilities. Section 1 covers the job-search process, including myths and realities about individuals with disabilities, attitudes and transferable skills, agencies that can help, resume writing, searching for job openings, job application forms, interviews, and disclosure of disability information. Section 2 covers the ADA, including disclaimer, definitions, essential job functions, reasonable accommodation, undue hardship, employment process considerations, alcohol and drug issues, workers compensation, and employment discrimination. The final section of resources lists telephone numbers of federal agencies involved with the ADA; 24 pamphlets, videotapes, and other materials concerning the ADA and job-hunting; and Colorado Workforce Centers.
