Abstract | This paper discusses the pre-colonial aboriginal societies that in part established laws, customs, and history through art. The paper cites their artistic mediums and methods and explains that art among the aborigines was used for learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be. The paper describes the role of art in pre-colonial aboriginal societies under the following headings: Learning, Doing, Observation, Patience, Transition, Totems, Simple Logic, Art, Rules, X-Ray, Drawings, Etchings, The Professionals, Innovation, and Stone Arrangements and Carvings.
