AbstractThis booklet is intended for teachers in grades K-12, guidance counselors, school administrators, preservice teachers and their college instructors, and interested parents. The information included in this publication has been gathered from the research and programs developed and refined by hundreds of dedicated teachers and researchers in the field of educational equity. What they found is that, depending on one's gender, race, or ethnicity, there is a difference in the mathematics and science education one receives. This differential is not affected by the number of students per teacher or even the number of computers in the classroom; rather, it is a direct result of the classroom environment and the content of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET) courses that reinforce our cultural stereotypes about suitable careers and occupations for girls. This booklet is a starting point for future growth in knowledge and practice of equitable pedagogy. (Contains names and contact information for resources in gender-fair practices.) (Author/ASK)
