Abstract | Built around the case method approach recommended by the Carnegie Foundation in their report "A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century," this hands-on, practical book presents 33 cases to absorb, analyze, and solve. The cases in the book dramatize the learning difficulties of students and the instructional options of teachers and are arranged in the order in which they might be expected to happen during the school year. Cases in the book are: (1) The Immoral Book; (2) Dialect Prejudice; (3) Thinking for Yourself; (4) Ethnic Literature or Just Literature?; (5) Writing: Creative, Practical, or Is There Any Difference?; (6) Killing "Caesar" (7) Poetry Is Boring; (8) Role Playing; (9) I Never Could Spell; (10) Writing Groups; (11) The Unread Story; (12) Heterogeneous Grouping; (13) Forgotten Words; (14) Teaching the Novel; (15) Monotonous Sentences; (16) Why Can't We Read What We Want to Read?; (17) Declining Reading Scores; (18) Mechanical Errors in Writing; (19) Exasperating Exams; (20) Elitism in the School Literary Magazine; (21) The Few Who Answer; (22) Etymology or What's in a Name?; (23) Plagiarism; (24) The Media Are the Question; (25) Dealing with Gifted Students; (26) Complaints about Grades in Compositions; (27) Research Papers; (28) Choosing Things for Other People to Read; (29) The Uninspired Papers; (30) Dealing with the Dictionary; (31) The Spoken or Mumbled Word; (32) Playing Games; and (33) The Unplanned Lesson.
