Abstract | Atlantic Baptist College, a small liberal arts institution in New Brunswick, Canada, developed a strategic planning process for long-range planning and used the new structure to create a 5-year institutional plan. The following principles guided the planning process: (1) all senior administrators participated directly in every aspect; (2) planners focused on substance not form and designed the plan to be simple and flexible; and (3) all levels of staff contributed to the process. The planning committee consisted of the senior administration, two full-time and two part-time faculty members, two students, two members of the Board of Governors, and staff from various departments. Using a modified version of Robert C. Shirley's strategic analysis model, the Committee identified external forces that would affect the College and distinguished strengths, weaknesses, constraints, and opportunities. Subsequently the Committee developed a list of five factors for each of four key areas and a statement of values and assumptions driving the plan. The Committee then opened the process to the institutional community in general for discussion and input. The final 5-year plan includes a mission statement, planning assumptions, a vision for the 21st century, and goals and objectives. In the final step members developed action plans for each major department. The appendix contains a complete copy of the final strategic plan. (JB) |
