Abstract | The Eidos Program, sponsored by the Idyllic Foundation, is a private community-based organization that, with schools and other cooperating agencies and sponsors, helps young people whose needs are not adequately met by existing instituions. The program, which was funded for six months by the Job Training Partnership Act, provided educational and counseling services that are specifically focused to bridge the gaps that exist between the functions of the family, the school, and other agencies. The program was designed to serve 20 disadvantaged youths who had dropped out of school in Rome, New York. The program was given the name of Eidos, which means a "new way of seeing" in Greek. It targets 16- to 21-year-olds who have exhibited patterns of failure in the community, at home, and in school. Eidos provides these youth with highly individualized courses taught by three teachers and preemployment training in a supportive community setting for three hours a day. In addition, students are placed in part-time jobs. Eidos emphasizes promoting each student's sense of self-worth through opportunities for achievement that contribute to the community and their personal growth. (This report contains examples of assessment and evaluation forms used in the administration of the program.) (Author/KC) |
