| Abstract | The academic rank distribution of full-time faculty at Canadian universities is examined and the potential rank distribution until 1984-1985 is projected. Changes in the distribution are simulated assuming that the number of full-time teachers remains constant during that period. At the national level, three separate projections are presented simulating possible promotion trends for full-time university teachers between 1978-1979 and 1984-1985. It was assumed, for these projections, that the proportion of full professors would increase annually by 0.5, 0.8, and 1.0 percentage points and for associate professors by 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 percentage points, respectively, with a corresponding decline at the two junior ranks. The results of the projections show that by 1984, 76.5 percent to 87.0 percent of the professoriate will be holding one of the two senior ranks, with considerable variation among the 45 universities. About 66 percent of the full-time academic staff at Canadian universities are now at those levels. Data are presented on the median salary of full-time university teachers by rank; academic rank distribution of full-time university teachers; projected rank distribution of full-time university teachers; median age of teachers by rank and teaching field; academic rank distribution by teaching field; and percentage increase in median salary by academic rank. Appendices include explanatory notes and detailed data on actual and projected rank distribution of full-time faculty for each university and province for each year in the period 1975-1976 through 1984-1985.
