Abstract | This paper refers to data collected in a number of large scale national studies and to the findings of a number of smaller studies to suggest that factors in the personal characteristics of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds explain the underrepresentation of blacks, Hispanics and other low status students in higher education institutions. The topics addressed in this review include: (1) the educational, personal, social and vocational aspirations, values, and expectations of low status students and the relationship of these goals and beliefs to their academic motivation and achievement in college; (2) the academic personality characteristics of low status students and how these characteristics are conducive to success in higher education; and (3) to what degree these students are persisting in college and what personal and institutional factors are most predictive of retention or dropout. A list of references is included. (Author/EB) |
