Abstract | In this paper, the author explores two aspects of the role of research in the continuing education of educators of adults: What research has been done about the continuing education of educators of adults? and What should be the roles of research? Content covering the first of these questions comprises three-fourths of the paper and reviews the major findings of sixteen studies pertaining to the education of adult educators. Regarding the second question, nine roles of research are suggested, including to establish an empirical data base and other evidence for determining the characteristics, competencies, and roles of educators of adults; to establish a theoretical base or model for determining the characteristics, competencies, and roles of educators of adults; to determine which characteristics and competencies can be acquired and/or can be learned or taught; to translate adult education research so that it can be used as a resource for learning by educators of adults; and to integrate or meld theory and practice.
