AbstractIn this study, the enrollment distribution of students attending New York City Community Colleges is examined and evaluated. The introductory section presents briefly the national enrollment picture for two-year and four-year colleges, enumerates the various projections that have been developed by federal and state agencies, and evaluates the prospects for continued enrollment growth in the years ahead. This section serves as an overview of the community college movement and as a summary of the changing profile of college students and the various factors which may lead to shifts in enrollment distribution. Section two examines the distribution of enrollment in New York City Community Colleges, the curriculum preferences of students, the geographic origin of students, the grade distribution of students, and credit hour attrition within the academic semester. The final section projects the Colleges into the immediate years ahead. The findings in this report support the general recommendation that expanded institutional efforts be directed to the development of non-traditional educational programs in all units of the Colleges and to the recruitment of non-traditional students. Major problems associated with institutional growth are discussed, and recommendations are drawn pertaining to college organization and financial support. (Author/NHM)
