Abstract | Written for presidents and other academic and administrative leaders of American colleges and universities, this report presents both a philosophy and a practical format for the management of change. Theories of planned change and organizational development are discussed and applied to the structure of higher education. Planning guidelines offered are concerned with how to identify one's goals and objectives, how to anticipate change both within and outside the institution, and how to implement mechanisms which allow institutions to both attain their goals and respond to the constant flux in higher education. They encourage institutions to implement a systematic and futuristic approach to university management. The prime purpose of the paper is to diffuse information about the planned change managerial approach and to stimulate use of the mechanisms of planned change within American colleges and universities.
