AbstractEnvironmental education must be shaped to generate universal involvement in environmental aspects of life, in all political systems. It is absurd for political systems to attempt to adapt ecological factors to fit the underlying political assumptions; political philosophy must become consistent with ecological truths. In the developing nations it is most important to rapidly introduce environmental education for higher education students, who will be most able to influence policy. This-higher education should enable students to see that economic development and ecological conservation practices are not incompatible. For example, marginal lands, which tend to be unsuccessfully converted to agricultural uses, can contribute to a nation's economic development more effectively when alternative uses are planned for the land. National Parks and Game Reserves in some poor tropical nations have demonstrated that these areas, if conserved and managed in the light of ecological principles, can generate much more income than if they were convertd to food production and their long-term usefulness destroyed.
