| Abstract | A survey was made to determine the community development programs presently being conducted in universities and colleges in each state of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Replies were received from 53.4% of the 375 universities and colleges polled. The most specific question, on whether the institution has a community development department, received the lowest affirmative response (19%), and the least specific question, on whether community development is considered a responsibility of the institution, received the highest affirmative response (63%), showing there is a definite awareness of community development. Institutions differ in definitions and in extent of commitment to community development, but junior colleges show the most initiative. More interest was found concentrated in the Great Lakes states, and in institutions located near or in cities. Adult education programs, consultative services, and use of institutional facilities were frequently mentioned, but the survey indicates that the community development field is still changing.
