Abstract | This paper discusses the benefits and strategies of teaching Young Adult Literature in Advanced ESL classes, focusing on developing literacy and introducing culture. Teachers can use Young Adult books to enlarge the students' vocabulary, introduce authentic expressions, and scaffold the students' writing. Teaching strategies include cloze tests, prompt sentences and imitated writing. Teachers can, through class discussions, reading groups, and reflective writing, teach Young Adult books to help ESL students develop a deep, yet personal, insight on some socio-cultural issues present in the United States.
