Abstract	Mobility and especially the organized mobility of the European training programmes, ERASMUS, COMETT, TEMPUS and LINGUA, is considered to be a form of internationalization which raises economic as well as political issues. At stake is the increased economic competitiveness of the EC member states, but also the construction of an 'enlarged Europe' through economic restructuring and the development of democracy in Central and Eastern Europe. Research should therefore aim to assess the impact of mobility on change in higher education at institutional level, as well as at the level of disciplines, curricula, qualifications and certification. (...) The present paper draws upon the views of key actors in the field of higher education and educational policy in Europe. and Social Policy in Paris. The interviews were based on a questionnaire which dealt with quantitative and qualitative aspects of mobility in the context of the internationalization of higher education in Europe. The chapters are entitled as follows: 1) Mobility and internationalization, 2) International academic cooperation and mobility prior to the EC training programmes, 3) The EC training programmes and the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, programmes and the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, 4) The impact of the EC training programmes on international cooperation and mobility in higher education (quantitative and qualitative aspects of change, geographical aspects, political and institutional change and fresh outlook, subject area participation and trends in integrated curriculum development and academic recognition, attitudes to organized international student and staff mobility), 5) the future of internationalization and mobility.
