Abstract | The professional identity of secondary school teacher is mainly influenced by the subject matter which they teach. This paper presents a model of history, geography and civics as a frame inside which and according to which the professional identity builds itself from the point of view of theory and practice. In order to build this model, the author relies on the notions of school culture and subject matter to study the main official texts which have governed the teaching of these three subjects for over a century. The model thus built closely unites the purposes, the conditions and the forms of teaching as they are defined by the school constraints, rules and habits as well as the contents and method of the teaching and the evaluation procedure.
