Abstract | "The tensions between schools and families within their communities befuddle devotees of 'The American Dreem' , a dream of living well which honours the sanctity of both home and school as institutions. ... The current Yearbook is designed to explore more fully the confusions and demands of the pact between families, communities and schools. This volume is an exploration of the various obligations for schools as social institutions. ... Part I is devoted to an explication of the issues surrounding professional and personal interests. Each of the three chapters draws from different intellectual traditions in mapping movement between professionals and individuals, educators and society. ... Chapter 1 ... gives us an overview of how teacher professionalism was established through increasing politicization of teacher identity and teacher unions. ... Chapter 2 is a response to the political rhetoric surrounding the term community. ... Chapter 3 ... lays out one understanding of the political debates about schooling." The chapters of part II are about: the "micro- ecology of school - community links"; the parents' view of the "tensions and trade-offs in home - school partnerships"; the problems teachers have in "facing the challenges posed by changing family structures." "Part III addresses the essential issues posed by the emerging issues of democracy in the late twentieth century": The influences of fundamentalistic religious tenets on public education; problems of school privatization; "how parents and teachers view their roles in children's lives"; "disputes between teachers and parents over alternative assessment in California".
