Abstract	For both general and professional training, the primary teachers' training plan specifically mentions and calls for a European dimension: in the history and sociology of education programmes, "problems linked with cultural differences", and in the civic education programme, "France and Europe". For modern languages the plan notably includes obligatory training for all in first and second year, and the overall objective of cultural and linguistic training clearly indicates that modern language learning as practised at the IUFM and advocated for primary school is directly in line with work being conducted at the Council of Europe. 24 teachers of all subjects took part in a survey begun in September 1996 on the European dimension in their practices and on problems encountered.
