Abstract | The article addresses the question: "How does the family background determine the educational career of young people? How is the family's socioeconomic status (and particularly parents' educational level) linked to their children's level of achievement? We shall therefore focus on whose children follow a higher and longer educational path and whose follow a lower and shorter path. Our data is divided into three categories: students obtaining qualifications in postcompulsory educational institutions in 1985 and 1990, the 20 - 24 year old age group a a whole and 20 - 24 year-old university students. Our chief concern is to examine from empirical data on educational behaviour how far the objectives of equality laid down in official educational policy have been achieved. First, we will provide a brief overview of the educational system in Finland and evoke some of the problems it generates. We will then examine some of the research literature on social mobility and report on the educational paths that are chosen by the children of parents from different social classes or with different levels of education and/or cultural capital and conclude with an assessment of how faith in education has been affected by the changing environment.
