Abstract | Return-to-Work is a short-term group counseling intervention consisting of three major components: coping with disability and related life changes, life and benefits planning, and return to work. It is designed to enhance functional adaptation to mid-career disabilities by using structured activities and discussion to teach individuals how to change the nature of their "assumptive worlds" and, in so doing, to establish personal directions for their physical and vocational rehabilitation programs. These new directions are considered in terms of the functional beliefs and coping skills (interpersonal control, self-efficacy, and direct action) required to increase the probability that the person will return to work. The three modules present appraisal/reappraisal, remotivation, and restructuring strategies. Specific topics addressed by the modules include: ways that disability and unemployment affect personal, social, family, and vocational functioning; emotional and behavioral reactions to disability; rational behavior problem solving; life goals; the impact of work resumption on financial benefits; work readiness assessment; vocational interests assessment; and a vocational goal plan. This trainer's manual contains a suggested narrative that the trainer may paraphrase and displays each page of the Participant's Workbook, containing 25 activities designed for use in a small-group counseling program. Appendix A presents the theoretical rationale for the intervention, and Appendix B describes the provisions and benefits of Social Security, Workers' Compensation, and Long-Term Disability Insurance.
