The German Education Portal (GEP) is the central access point to scientific educational information. By rendering this information service openly accessible, the German Education Portal supports the principle of Open Access, i.e. public access to scientific knowledge and information. At the heart of the service, reference databases provide comprehensive information collections on different aspects of educational science.

Bibliographic indexing: the German Education Index (FIS Bildung) as a central aspect, the document server peDOCS and the German Education Server, as well as the thematic catalogue offer interested users a comprehensive range of information that is available free of charge, addressing the entire scope of education. The services offered by the GEP are closely networked, allowing for comfortable thematic search and navigation, i.e. researching for publications and internet resources. Openly available web resources can be accessed immediately.  

The Portal

The following modules are integrated into the German Education Portal:

• the German Education Index (free of charge)
• the Document server pedocs (free of charge)
• Metasearch across a large number of pedagogical databases (mostly free of charge)
• the "Subject Directory" - a service providing systematic contextual scholarly information (free of charge)

The following individual features are included in the German Education Portal's "one-stop shop":

• academically relevant research for printed and electronic literature,
• search queries pertaining to the Electronic Journals Library (EZB) via the German Education Index,
• direct access to free electronic full texts,
• access to payable publications, via pay-per-view offerings and document delivery services,
• a parallel search across educational databases indexing literature, online resources, facts, media catalogues, educational history, international aspects,
• a search for information in the domain of educational science - institutions, projects, etc. - according to a system of subdisciplines,
• link tips regarding further pertinent scientific information,
• a message board including news and relevant event dates,
• a joint pool of data with the German Education Server,
• an opportunity to announce the bibliographical data of your printed publication or the opportunity to launch your electronic publication on the document server pedocs. Publishing houses can find information regarding possible co-operations and respective models on the website.

 

Provider

The German Education Server is provided by the Information Center for Education, located at the German Institute for International Educational Research(DIPF), Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The German Research Association (DFG) sourced the initial setup and development of the portal within its framework programme for establishing virtual science libraries. The GEP has been on line since August 2005. Right from the start, the German Education Index constituted a central service, which is maintained by the Information Center for Education in co-operation with its partner institutions, organised in the FIS Bildung networkwhich has continualls crown since 1994.  

Scientific Monitoring

The development of the German Education Portal is continually monitored by a scientific advisory council of researchers representing the domains of educational science, subject didactics and information science. Members of the scientific advisory board are: Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gogolin, Prof. Dr. Hans Merkens, Prof. Dr. Jakob Ossner, Prof. Dr. Achim Oßwald, Prof. Regine Scheffel, Prof. Dr. York Sure, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Wittpoth.
