AbstractA survey conducted between April 1982 and January 1983 collected ratings of vocational training from former students, employers, and supervisors. Over 1,500 former students (completers and leavers) rated their vocational education in terms of technical knowledge, work attitude, work quality, overall rating, relative preparation in comparison to coworkers without a vocational education, and academic preparation. Over 775 employers/supervisors rated five aspects of their employees' vocational training and/or job performance. (They did not rate academic preparation.) Former students, vocational training, and/or job performance were rated as good to very good in all five areas by 80-90 percent of the employers/supervisors. Employers gave one aspect, work attitude, a consistently high rating. Almost 80 percent of the employers rated former vocational students as better prepared than coworkers. Neither supervisors' nor students' responses suggested that vocational education was less effective for females than males or more effective for one racial ethnic group over another. The training and/or job performance of former students varied significantly by occupational training program, type of vocational school attended, and school attended. Students' responses were very positive and closely paralleled supervisors' ratings. (Appendixes, amounting to over one-half of the report, include forms and participants' comments.) (YLB)
