Abstract | FORD FOUNDATION INTEREST AND INVOLVEMENT IN ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, LINGUISTICS, AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING IS DESCRIBED. FOUR OF THE FOUNDATION'S NINE PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THESE AREAS. "INTERNATIONAL TRAINING AND RESEARCH" IS CONCERNED WITH IMPROVING AMERICAN COMPETENCE IN THE INTERNATIONAL FIELD. "EDUCATION" HAS ASSISTED LANGUAGE TRAINING IN SCHOOLS. "OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT" HAS EMPHASIZED ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES. "INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS" HAS ASSISTED THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE IN JAPAN. WORLDWIDE LEADERSHIP IN LINGUISTICS AND LANGUAGE TEACHING IS PROVIDED BY THE CENTER FOR APPLIED LINGUISTICS, ESTABLISHED IN WASHINGTON, D.C., WITH A GRANT FROM THE FORD FOUNDATION. THE AMERICAN COUNCIL OF LEARNED SOCIETIES, WHICH PLAYED A LARGE PART IN THE WARTIME LANGUAGE PROGRAMS OF THE ARMED FORCES, ALSO HAS RECEIVED FORD FOUNDATION SUPPORT.
