Abstract | While digitization is often linked to the promise of individualized learning support, current tools in foreign language learning fall short of delivering on this promise. The authors argue that for tools to provide valid individualized feedback to learners, it is essential for the computational methods to integrate the analysis of learner language with information about tasks and learners. Making the vision concrete, the authors present the intelligent language tutoring system FeedBook, which was developed to replace a traditional 7th grade English workbook. The system integrates task, learner, and language information to provide learners with immediate scaffolding feedback. The feedback is designed to incrementally guide a learner towards successful completion of exercises covering the lexical and grammatical concepts of the official school curriculum. In addition to fostering learning, interactive practice at home that is independent of parents also has the potential of reducing educational inequality. (Verlag, adapt.). |
